Fruit and Fear

My middle daughter came home from semester break. She came in and asked if I wanted her Bible class text books on Genesis. YEP!

So, I decided I would read through at least one of my new found treasures, Genesis: The Story We Haven’t Heard by Paul Borgman. Not necessarily a book review, but something that I found interesting in the chapter discussing the Creation fall account.

The author writes, “The serpent discovers, and works to advantage, the most subtle and sophisticated anxiety know to the human species . . . Someone else has it better, or is better, an uneasiness that gnaws like an aching tooth.” FEAR is the trump card! Hmm! Makes you think!!

I have always believed really that the serpent plays in to the “desire to be like God” card. By pointing to the forbidden fruit, Adam and Eve found it good to the eyes, good to eat and be like God. But the serpent took them down the path of fear in which they doubted what they had been told by God. It did not matter everything else God said they could eat and the paradise that God had placed them in, and God’s presence with them (Genesis 3:8). What mattered was what the serpent said and it created doubt, FEAR.

How many of us has missed out on God’s blessings because of our own fear? How many of us feel that we have everything for life and godliness yet feel we still don’t have everything? How many of us have even said or thought, “if I only try harder, then God will . . . “

Do a quick Bible search this week – look for the phrase “do not be afraid”, “fear not” or something like that! Then, remember this verse:

With all your heart you must trust the Lord
and not your own judgment.
Always let him lead you,
and he will clear the road for you to follow.” Proverbs 3:5-6 (CEV)
Trust will lead you long before fear will ever let you go!
