“The way of a fool is right in his own eyes, but a wise man listens to advice.” (Proverbs 12:15)
Here I sat in my first real college classroom in about 15 years. I was at least 10 years older than the next oldest in my cohort. There were only 9 of us. Suffice to say, I myself was a bit anxious.
My first class in pursuit of a Master of Arts in Community Counseling had begun. The professor began intstill within in us the goal of a counselor is to help. “We are not advise givers; we are counselors,” she said.
I don’t remember their names, but I see their faces. Several times, my counseling intersected with my ministry as several of my classmates, knowing that I was in ministry, would seek me out for spiritual counseling. I in turn would offer a different perspective. Maybe something they had never thought.
Even today I think about and I’m reminded of Rehoboam. Read through 1 Kings 12. Rehoboam had just been made fourth king of Israel after Solomon’s death. Led by Jeroboam, a group of Israelites come to Rehoboam requesting a lighter burden compared to his father Kind Solomon. Rehoboam sought counsel of older men and then younger men. He chose to listen to one group over the other which eventually led to the nation of Israel dividing.
My counseling is a way to offer various perspectives much like an outsider. I pray each time I meet with a client that I’m able to offer wise counsel. Should you need a different perspective on a challenge you are facing, let me know how I can be of assistance.
Be blessed and be a blessing!
