Be Right – Welcome to Rome

The first chapter in the letter to the Romans is more about who Paul is than it is about the Roman church itself. Not saying that the church in Rome was not important to Paul. It certainly was! But Paul uses this introduction in the letter to share his love for Christ, his gospel and its connection to the church.

He starts with presenting himself. Paul, says he, is a servant of Jesus Christ (v.1), an apostle (v. 1), a preacher of the gospel (v. 1-4), and missionary to Gentiles (v. 5-7).

He then shares his concern for the church. Paul had a unique relationship with the early church. As a missionary, he had a connection to many of the early churches as one to minister to them in their infancy. The church in Rome was no exception. So, he tells them that he is thankful for them (v. 8), prays for them (v. 9-10), loves them (v. 11-12), indebted to them (v. 13-14), and waiting to visit them. (v. 15).

To Paul, though, the heart of the matter is the gospel of Jesus. It is the foundation of Paul’s preaching and teaching. It is where he gains his confidence – something he says is not something to be ashamed of (v.16-17) because it is the power of God that leads to our salvation.

So, parents and others, think about this:

  1. Can we be like Paul and look at our children in the way Paul saw himself with relation to the early church as an apostle, a servant of Christ, a “preacher” of the gospel?
  2. Much like Paul’s concern for the early church and ministering to our children from infancy, are we thankful for our children? Do we pray for them? Love them?
  3. Do we, like Paul, gain our confidence in the gospel of Christ knowing it is the power of God for our salvation and for those of our children?

Be blessed and be a blessing!!
