Ask anyone in my family and they will tell you that one of my all time favorite television shows is The Andy Griffith Show. In most cases, you tell me the title of the episode and I can tell you the plot. There is one episode from the first season in which a gentleman’s car breaks down coming in to Mayberry. Andy gets the gentleman to Gomer who can’t fix it, but his cousin, Goober, could . . . only it’s Sunday. And Goober is out on his boat. In one scene, Gomer shows up to say that Goober was going to fix the car. As he is leaving, he turns to Andy and says, “Goober says, Hey Andy!”. Andy replies, “Hey to Goober!!”
I think that what Paul does here in the last chapter of Romans. He takes a few moments to greet people in this church by name. With some of the names, he tells them why they are so special to them.
So I got to thinking . . . if I were want to send greetings to people that who have been a blessing to me with whom I have limited contact (social media not included), here is who I want to say HEY! to:
- Greet Randy Gill and Joe Bentley – both who taught a love for music and glorifying God with my voice;
- Greet the Kilgore, Girdley and Kadrich families – whose love for the Lord brought us together and whose love for family welcomed us as their own;
- Greet David Thomas and Royce Dickinson, Jr. – both have passed from this life, but taught me in the short span of time, the heart of ministry and the joy of the Word
- Greet Dan Corp and Tim Tostige – two of my college roommates – we laughed, cried, studied, played Whiffle ball in our dorm room – memories that I cherish.
I pray that God has sent people in your life that challenged your faith and helped you grow. People that laughed and cried with you. They partnered with your through life’s ups and downs. That even though, you don’t see them as much or have as much contact, when you here their name, you smile. In the meantime, I say “Hey!!”
Be blessed and be a blessing!
