As this is being written and published, we are now in February. By now, most of us have given up on any resolutions we may have made at the new year. But I’m here to say it’s not too late.
Lois Cheney’s introduction to God Is No Fool is a gentle reminder to me that it IS never too late to begin or begin again a time just with God. “A daily period of time is set aside for an individual to concentrate on spiritual contact with his God, and that time is called a time of meditation, a devotional time, or simply devotions. How peculiar to call a planned patter of Bible reading, a prompted prayer, or the casual reading of some one else’s thoughts, an act of devotion.”
Devoting ourselves to Bible readings and daily time with God does take time . . . predetermined time. If we have the mindset of “I’ll get to it!”, then it doesn’t really get done. We will have other things distract us from that.
Recently, I heard a friend’s sermon on silence. As he has learned the art of silence, he said one thing he does is when he wakes up, before he gets out of bed, he says this simple prayer, “Today is yours, God! I will follow your leading.”
Cheney adds, “To search for the life meaning of loving God asks much: it requires an attempt to feel, to touch, and to taste the love that is promised to those who engage in an honest reaching out to God through Christ.” (bold emphasis, mine)Notice the language – requires an attempt.
So as the month of February starts and we still have that “Happy New Year!” vibe, let us be diligent to take specific, dedicated time each day to spend with God.
“Let the morning bring me word of your unfailing love,
for I have put my trust in you.
Show me the way I should go,
for to you I entrust my life.” (Psalm 143:8)
Be blessed and be a blessing!
