I was working in my yard, listening to music and a song came through the cycle, “In the corner of my mind . . . stands a juke box . . . it’s playing all my favorite memories.” What a great way to describe how we look at our memories!
As I continue to learn about how the brain functions, it’s funny to me how the brain will “file” something away. Then, just as quickly, retrieve that memory when it’s triggered. For example, there are songs that I sing and know that take me back to being a kid riding in a car and singing with my dad. There are phrases like “$1.29! It’s a $1.29!” said with just right inflection and tone that help me remember my sister, Susie.
It works with all of our senses too. I’ll say a word and I’m positive you’ll think of a memory.
Ready? BACON!
Let’s try it again! COLD!
You see what happens is the brain pulls up the memory and you will automatically respond emotionally, good or bad. So when I say, BACON, you’ve already thought of a memory and you have a good or bad emotion.
That’s the reason why Jesus said, when he gave us His supper, to “do this in remembrance of me.” (Luke 22:19) It’s a reminder for us to put in our mind but it should also trigger an emotional response. How we respond is based on how we view the table and the reason behind Jesus’ words. He is again reminding His disciples that He was to die.
So, today, we still remember. It’s my prayer that in our remembering, we are excited for the work of Christ that continues to provide an avenue to God. Also, it’s reminder that we anticipate Christ’s return as he promised, “I will not drink again of this fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father’s kingdom.” (Matthew 26:29) So keep remembering!!
Be blessed and be a blessing!
