This week, I’ll venture out with the teens to Shults-Lewis. Again, I think this is the b-zillionth time to go out to Valparaiso, Indiana. Over the years, our team has experienced our fair share of “miserableness” from this trip – primarily from bus issues.
First of all, let me explain Shults-Lewis to you for those unaware. It is a residential treatment facility to help teens adjust to family life. In most cases, family life is poor or non-existent. In some cases, there is a breakdown between the parents and teen.
My personal experience began early in life. My family, large as it was (7 kids at home ourselves), would “adopt” a teen for the holidays. As early has 6 or 7 years old, I remember driving up to Valpo to pick up one of the residents for Christmas. This happened until my early teens.
Now fast forward to ministry work at Plymouth. For many years, while I served as the youth minster, we would travel to Valpo to work on their campus. It is still a highlight of the summer for many of our teens and adults. We joke about the “miserable mission trip” that it is. However, it serves a great need to the staff and students of Shults-Lewis. So we go! I go!
