For several days now, I’ve been fighting a cold in my head. So, I have upped my “ounce of prevention” to a “pound”. I have things to do and places to be. So, being sick does not fit in to my plans that have already been made.
In fact, I know exactly what has happened that has created my illness. My body is coming off of a very busy Thanksgiving holiday weekend. Most of the weekend, while enjoyable, was spent waking up early, being active during the day and going to bed late at night. So, my body’s defenses were strained. I needed rest!
So, for the past few days, I have tried to take advantage of some slower days to get some rest. One of the “activities” to help with my “ounce of prevention” came in the form of naps. I’ve almost had to force myself to just rest.
Maybe that’s what Jesus was meaning when he said:
“Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11:28, ESV)
Or take a look at this:
Are you tired? Worn out? . . . Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. (Matthew 11:28, The Message)
Our bodies tell us what Jesus already has told us . . . that sometimes our bodies get weary from the burdens of life. We go from this activity to another event, running here and there until our bodies just give way to sickness because our physical defenses get weakened.
Jesus says, Come and get rest! Forget the busyness! Take a nap – physically and spiritually! In slowing ourselves down, we will find the rest we need to recharge our bodies and get well!
Be blessed and be a blessing!
