Linus and His Blanket

Everyone knows who Linus is. He is the security blanket carrying, thumb sucking brother of bully Lucy and best friend to Charlie Brown. He is the one who helps Charlie Brown “find his way” when it comes to discovering the true meaning of Christmas.

In the climax scene of the epic Christmas classic, A Charlie Brown Christmas, Linus stands in an empty auditorium and quotes Luke 2:8-14. But I want you to observe something the next time you watch the show and I bring this up because it was something that was pointed out to me. Next time you’re sitting around the television watching Charlie Brown Christmas, notice what happens to Linus’ blanket when he says,

“And the angel said unto them, ‘Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.'”

At the moment he says, “Fear not”, he drops the blanket! His object of security to help with his anxiety is now on the floor next to him. He declares that God is the one who brings true security! It is God who brings good news of blessings on all people.

What is your “security blanket?” What is the one thing you hang on to in order to feel safe? God has provided safety and security through Jesus. In fact, he says, “I will be with you!” The very name given to Jesus is Emmanuel which is “God with us”!

So as we gather around the tree and share the joy of Christmas, let us be reminded of our God, whose promise of always being near, came in the form of a human, lived on this world, died for our sins, rose for our hope and still is with us through His Holy Spirit. Knowing that we can drop any “blanket” we have held onto!

Be blessed and be a blessing!
