Describe God?

Many years ago, I was the emcee at a banquet at Rochester University. Usually, banquets were scheduled right before final exams for the semester. So, I wanted to give the students a heads up on some of the test questions from some of their instructors – all in jest. One sample question was for a Bible professor, Dr. Steve Eckstein, “Describe God. Be brief and site all sources.”

As we have been reading through the Psalms, it occurred to me over the first week how many different ways the writers of the Psalms describe God. Words like stronghold, rock, refuge, shield, shepherd. These are names outside Lord God, Most High, etc.

As with most songwriters, songs come out of their life experiences. Most of the Psalms were songs of David and his experiences. David, the shepherd boy, leader of Saul’s army, the king, and also the adulterer, the murderer.

Let’s say you’re going to write a song out of your experiences and how you have seen God at work in your life. What words would you use?

Here’s another thing – I think about as I type this. If we focus on what God does in our lives instead of how much we have let him down, how much greater does the song we write and sing come more freely? It would seem the melody and the words would flow like streams of water.

How would you describe God and how he is working in your life? The world is waiting to hear your song!

Be blessed and be a blessing!
