Sing Your Story – 6

Most of us have really struggled this year. 2020 has not been the “perfect vision” we cast back in January as we had hoped.

It has been a weird year.

Yet life has gone on . . . hospitals took care of sick people, some people passed away and we mourn their loss, schools are in discussion of going back and some already have.

It has been a weird year.

In 1978, Henry Smith was a young seminary graduate ready to start at a church and minister to its people. But because of a degenerative eye condition that would eventually leave him blind, he struggled to find a church home.

One day, during a period of meditation, Henry Smith was reflecting on a verse that seemed to awaken his soul.

“For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor, so that you by his poverty might become rich.” (2 Corinthians 8:9, ESV)

From this one verse and moment of meditation, these words were written, and the song, Give Thanks, was born.

“And now, let the weak say I am strong, let the poor say I am rich because of what the Lord has done for us.”

Years later, a young worship leader, Don Moen, recorded the song. The song is a global anthem of thanksgiving and trust. You can sing or hum it all over the world and someone will recognize the song.

Yes, 2020 has not been a perfect year! Certainly not one that anyone of us expected. Yet, in all of this, maybe we can find ourselves drawn to a moment of thanksgiving. Maybe in our weariness and weakness, we are made more aware of God’s strength. In our moments of feeling “poor”, we bask in the glory of God’s richness that he lavishes on us. Maybe, just maybe, we can find some way to find a song of thanks on our lips every day and every moment.

Be blessed and be a blessing!
