Changes

By some, it is believed that Albert Einstein said, “The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.”

David Bowie’s song, Changes, has these lyrics, “I watch the ripples change their size, But never leave the stream of warm impermanence.” In essence what he is saying is, while circumstances of life are always changing (ripples), we are reminded to keep in mind the essence of our true self (never leave the stream).

Some have even said, “The more things change, the more they stay the same.” Even the Wise King said, “What has been is what will be, and what has been done is what will be done, and there is nothing new under the sun.” (Ecclesiastes 1:9, ESV) Solomon even goes on to say,

“Don’t get excited—it’s the same old story.
Nobody remembers what happened yesterday.
And the things that will happen tomorrow?
Nobody’ll remember them either.
Don’t count on being remembered.” (Ecclesiastes 1:11, The Message)

Not very encouraging, huh? All of us would like to hear that our lives made a difference. We just celebrated my mom’s life several weeks ago. We honored her memory by telling stories. We talked about her compassion for people, her love for dad and her family, how she would make sure everyone was taken care of.

How do we find our true self? I’m reading with several clients Seven Desires by Mark & Debbie Laaser. Here are the seven desires: to be heard and understood, to be affirmed, to be blessed, to be safe, to be touched, to be chosen, and to be included.

Over the next several weeks, we’ll explore each of these, looking at them from spiritual and self-awareness perspectives. In the meantime, honor God each day with the life he has given you, giving your day over to Him to guide and strengthen you.

And as always as you go about your daily routines . . . Be blessed and be a blessing!
