One of my favorite scenes in the musical, Fiddler on the Roof, is the scene between Tevye and Golde. He has just given permission for his daughter Tzeitel marry Hodel, because of love not because of the match maker. So, Tevye comes home and asks Golde, “Do you love me?” (Here! Watch the scene: Do You Love Me?)
At one point, Golde asks herself:
Do I love him?
For twenty-five years I’ve lived with him
Fought with him, starved with him
Twenty-five years my bed is his
If that’s not love, what is?
Jesus said, A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.” (John 13:34-35, ESV)
So, how do people know that you love them? How do they see it in your life? How do they know?
In the end, Tevye and Golde both come to a realization:
It doesn’t change a thing
But even so
After twenty-five years
It’s nice to know
However you choose to show love to your family or friends without even saying a word, it’s still nice to know. Showing love in various means is great, but maybe once in a while, they need to hear. Because it’s nice to know! There is some assurance that hearing the words, “I love you!” It’s nice to know!
And as Jesus said, “Let people see and hear that you love one another.” It’s just nice to know!
Be blessed in love! Be a blessing as you love one another.
