Everyone has a guy or gal! You know what I’m talking about. It’s the “my car needs to have a look at” – “I know a guy!”

“My roof is leaking!” – “I know a guy!”

“My furnace is on the fritz!” – “I know a guy!”

“I need a haircut!” – “I know a gal!”

There’s a scene in John’s gospel where this plays out. John the Baptist is preaching to his followers when Jesus comes by. John points to Jesus and says, “Behold, the Lamb of God!” A couple of John’s followers began to follow Jesus. One of those was a guy named Andrew. After spending some time with Jesus, Andrew went to find his brother, Simon, who later Jesus would call Peter. Andrew said, (Calkin paraphrase), “You still looking for the Messiah? I know THE guy!!” He then took Peter to Jesus.

Throughout John’s gospel, John then shares a part of Jesus’ ministry that the other three gospels don’t. Here’s how some of Jesus conversations with people went:

• Nicodemus – “I want something more than just words to have a real faith.” Jesus says, “Be born of water and spirit!”
• Woman at the Well – “I thirst for something more than just marginal relationships.” Jesus says, “Drink the living water I give and you will never thirst again.”
• Mary and Martha – “We know you have the power to heal, but our brother is dead.” Jesus says, “I am resurrection and life.”

Jesus just didn’t say, “I know a guy!” He said, “I am the guy!” One amazing thing about this is, Jesus is still THE guy. Maybe you’re saying:

• “My marriage is broken and needs fixing.” Jesus says, “Love one another!”
• “I feel anxious and worried all of the time.” Jesus says, “Peace! Be still!”
• “I’m so angry at people that have hurt me.” Jesus says, “Love your enemies!”

The other amazing thing about this is, I know this guy!! And you can too!

When the weight of the world seems likes it is crashing in, “I know a guy!” When the problems of life seem too great to bear, “I know a guy!” And I hope and pray that you know Him too!
