It’s funny how life works sometimes! This week has shown me how true the six degrees of separation plays out.
Here’s the short of the story: a school bus came into the church parking lot in between school runs. The bus snags up on a low power line disabling all of the power at the church building and a 5 mile radius. The snagged powerline damages the conduit and power box to the building. Enter an electrical contractor to repair the damage.
I spent some time talking with the contractor and his team. Along the way, I mentioned I would work up at Michigan Christian Youth Camp. He said, “My brother lives in Attica.” Then added, “I used to work at a basketball camp on the campus of Michigan Christian College, the name at the time.” Now I’m curious!! Garth Pleasant is the coach!! So now we start talking about the campus, basketball camp and Garth Pleasant!
Later, as the work was getting completed, I got a call from the bus driver. I had planned to follow up with her. I wanted her to know that accidents happen. No one was hurt! It’s all good! So, she then asks, “How long have you been at the church?” I replied, “23 years.” She said, “So do you remember [said the name of a family that used to attend the Plymouth church]? That was my uncle and aunt!” I replied, “I do!! I think I may have officiated his funeral.”
As I reflect on the events of this past week, I was reminded not just of the six degrees of separation but also this . . . we are called to be a light. It’s funny how almost 30 year after a high school student works at a basketball camp, he remembers the coach talking about life and basketball. Garth let his light shine!
How 20 years after a family dealt with the death of a beloved uncle, the family still talks about this couple’s connection to the church. The Plymouth church let their light shine!
So as you go along your path of life, be a light! Because somewhere down the road, someone may say, “It was because you were a light to me, I am where I am today! Thank you!”
“Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” (Jesus, Matthew 5:16)
Be blessed and be a blessing of light!
