Chasing the Northern Lights

I had a late counseling session. So, it was already going to be after 9:00 pm before I was going to be home. My wife, who had joined a Facebook group on tracking the northern lights, was gathering information from the group that the northern lights were happening that night. After several conversations back and forth, we decided we would go and find some dark corner of the world to see if we could catch this beautiful phenomenon. By the time I got home, there are now 5 of us road tripping. We find out the lights are going to be as far south as mid-Michigan. So off we go!

We drove for about two hours getting as far away as we could from any city lights, even small towns. We found a country road next to a corn field and stopped. All lights off! Cell phones are now being set to capture the lights! Photos are taken! One is posted to the group for verification that we have taken pictures of the northern lights. To the glee and giddiness of the group, “YES!” was the reply!

We had succeeded! Mission accomplished!

Then, somewhere in the dark, I started to see the stars. I looked around at the beauty of it all!

Then, I thought of this Psalm . . .

“The heavens declare the glory of God;
    the skies proclaim the work of his hands.” (Psalm 19:1, NIV)

I love a good story! As I work with people, I get them to talk about their story! Monday night, God was telling His story. In that moment, I saw the beauty and felt calm in God’s story being told! It was a time of worship internally that lasted all the way home! A celebration of the story being told as it has been told for years!

God invites us to see His story being told. You don’t have to chase the northern lights late into the night! But maybe just open your eyes to see in the darkness of the everyday, there are little lights shining all around! And who knows? You might be one of those little lights that someone is looking for as well!

Be blessed in chasing! Be a blessing to others along the way!
