I have not watched an episode of the show Young Sheldon. It’s in its final season, so I’m told. After seeing a clip that has been circulating around the internet (Young Sheldon: Sheldon helps Mary believe), I may have to watch. The scene is Sheldon’s mom is having some doubt about her faith. Sheldon offers a different perspective. He opens up, “Did you know that if gravity were slightly more powerful the universe would collapse into a ball? Also, if gravity were less powerful, the universe would fly apart and there would be no star or planets.” She asks, “Where are you going with this? Why are you trying to talk to me about believing in God when you don’t believe in God.” Sheldon replies, “I don’t! But the precision of the universe makes it logical to believe in a Creator. What are the odds of that?” After she tries to counter argue with him, he concludes with, “There are 5 billion people in this world, and you are the perfect mom for me. What are the odds of that?”
People have come and gone in this world. As I was writing this, I chose to listen to some recordings of my family singing from years ago. In this recording, we’re singing some of our favorites hymns and songs. I can pick out every person’s voice. What are the odds that I was born into a family that loves to sing songs about God?
Almost 35 years of marriage, 3 daughters and a son, a son-in-law, 3 grandchildren, we live life together. We have “pizza Fridays” at our house. Most of the time, we’re all there. It gets loud with the grandkids and all of us talking over each other. Sometimes, we play games. What are the odds that my family likes to be together and provide support to each other?
There were prophets who long ago talked about a coming Messiah. They even gave hints and clues along the way to prepare the Israelites. One day, in the town of Bethlehem, a baby was born. What are the odds that the Son of God would be born to bring salvation to a sinful world? Mathematicians have studied the odds. The odds of all of the prophecies coming true are astronomical!
About you! What are the odds that you were born in a time and place that you are in today? Among all of God’s creation, you are one of his best. When I watched that scene and heard the faith struggle the mother had, I was drawn to the story of Esther. Mordecai tells her that she was born for such a time as this. That may be a message for you as well. Is God letting you know that you were born for such a time as this?
Maybe you just need this reminder! Maybe I needed this reminder too! What are the odds that this video would show up in my social media feed at a time when I may need it most?
Be blessed! Be a blessing to others!
