“So let your heart sweetheart be your compass when you’re lost
And you should follow it wherever it may go
When it’s all said and done, you can walk instead of run
‘Cause no matter what, you’ll never be alone”, (Song by Lady A, released in 2013)
“The word ‘compassion’ starts with a ‘compass.’ When we meet people where they’re at, it gets us all where we need to go!” (David Pollack, Christ follower and football analyst, X (formerly Twitter) post 05/25/24)
When each of my daughters was in 6th grade, part of their curriculum was to go to 6th grade camp. Camp included travel to a YMCA camp where the staff taught different classes involving nature and science. One of the courses I remember was how to use a compass. Based on locating various landmarks placed around the camp, participants were given the opportunity to follow a compass to find their way to the landmarks.
I came across the Lady A song several years ago when putting together a graduate video. I used it as a way of encouraging our graduates as they transitioned to the next stage of life. Subtly, I felt it was a way for them to be reminded that as they experienced life’s ups and downs they were not alone as God and others were there to provide the support they needed.
David Pollack is a football analyst for college football. He is a former Georgia Bulldog, and played in the NFL for two years before a neck injury ended his professional career. I follow Mr. Pollack on X (formerly Twitter). Just about everyday he posts something to encourage others in the Christian walk. His post this past week caught my attention.
To me, it is a very profound statement. It is a reminder that the direction we need to be going in starts with a heart of empathy towards others. Foundationally, I know that a heart of compassion begins with God. Note what the Psalmist writes:
“The Lord is gracious and righteous;
our God is full of compassion.” (Psalm 116:5, NIV)
If we place our focus on the God of compassion, our hearts will lead us to places and moments of compassion, guiding us to be the people God has called us to be.
Be blessed in letting compassion be your guide!
