Expect the Unexpected, part 2

Last week, I wrote about thinking through the year 2024 from a different perspective (maybe). I encouraged us to think about ways that we were blessed or received a blessing that was not what we had expected. I even asked others to share their unexpected blessings. Here were some of the responses:

  • Several mentioned new grandchildren. Knowing some of these families, there had been some heartache trying in the pregnancies;
  • Some mentioned deeper relationships. A few went on to explain how it was a reconnection to family that they had not seen in a long time. Others mentioned the connection to co-workers.
  • Some shared about job promotions.
  • One person told me that their company was given national recognition for their support of women in business.
  • Some included surprise outcomes in education. Passing classes that were difficult.
  • Two in our church family had a cancer diagnosis. Over the last year, both have received favorable updates although treatments, medication and continued monitoring are still a part of their daily life.

My unexpected blessing was to be able to attend Harbor Lectureship at Pepperdine University. I had won the all expenses paid trip at Winterfest in Gatlinburg. I am grateful for the students who stopped by the Pepperdine table. I am grateful to Jeff Walling and Pepperdine for the opportunity to attend. It was a wonderful time for renewal and spiritual teaching.

Last of all, as a part of the Pepperdine trip, my wife was able to come for part of the week. We were able to stay a few extra days to celebrate our 35 year anniversary.

In 2 Kings 6, the story of Elisha is told during a time of war between Israel and Arabians. Elisha would tell the king of Israel where the Aramean army would be. Finally, out of frustration, the king of Aram sent his army to surround Elisha’s house. Elishas’s servant came out one morning to find the Aramean army surrounding the house and was afraid. Elisha prays, “Open his eyes that he may see!”

That is my prayer for us this year! I pray our eyes are being opened to see what the Lord is doing in our lives. In the Elisha story, the servant’s eyes were opened to see the army of God surrounding the enemy. What a powerful vision to see! The army of the Lord is at work to provide what we need each day. Let us be people to open our eyes to see the unexpected!

Be blessed! See the blessings from God each day! Be a blessing to others!
