There are friends—and then there are best friends.
Did you know there is such a thing as Best Friends Day? Just learned this – it is June 8 every year. So mark that date on your calendar!!
You know the difference the moment you’re around one. They’re the people you can laugh with until your stomach hurts, cry with when life falls apart, and sit with in silence when words just aren’t enough. Best friends aren’t just fun to be around—they help you become more you.
But what makes someone a best friend?
1. They See the Real You
A best friend is someone who knows your quirks, your fears, and your favorite ice cream flavor—and loves you anyway. They’ve seen your mess, your moods, and your Monday mornings, and they stick around.
In a world that often demands filters and performance, best friends give you the space to be honest. They remind you that you’re enough, just as you are.
2. They Stick Around
Life has its highs and lows. Some friends show up for the party, but best friends show up for the hard days—the broken heart, the job loss, the grief, the questions. Proverbs 17:17 puts it well: “A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for a time of adversity.”
A best friend doesn’t bail when things get messy. They walk in when everyone else walks out.
3. They Speak Truth with Grace
A best friend won’t just tell you what you want to hear—they’ll tell you what you need to hear. They know how to speak truth in love (Ephesians 4:15). Whether it’s encouraging you to take a risk, call your mom, or leave that unhealthy relationship, their honesty is rooted in care.
They don’t shame you. They sharpen you.
4. They Help You Grow
The best friendships inspire growth—not competition. A best friend celebrates your wins, prays for your dreams, and reminds you of your worth. They cheer you on and hold you accountable. They want to see you become the person God created you to be.
5. They’re a Gift
At the end of the day, best friends are a gift. Whether you’ve known yours for decades or just met recently, friendship is one of the most beautiful ways God shows His love. In fact, Jesus once said something remarkable to His disciples: “I have called you friends” (John 15:15).
What a thought—the Savior of the world calling us friends.
Who is that person for you? Maybe you’ve got a best friend who’s been your rock. Maybe you are that person for someone else. Maybe you’re still hoping for that kind of connection—and that’s okay too. Keep showing up. Keep being kind. Keep being real.
And remember: even on the loneliest days, you’re not without a friend. Jesus walks with you, listens to you, and never leaves your side.
Now that’s a best friend.
Be blessed, friends!! Be a blessing!
