Rocks! Rocks! More rocks! That pretty much sums up our vacation — and honestly, I didn’t mind it one bit. Like I mentioned last week, getting away gives us space to relax and recharge from life’s busyness.
This time, our travels took us to the coast of Lake Superior in search of the elusive agate. Spoiler alert: it’s still elusive. We also wandered the shores of Petoskey, Michigan, hunting for the famous Petoskey stone — and this time, we actually found a few!
As we combed the beaches, eyes scanning the ground for hidden treasures, I had a “God moment.” I started noticing the rocks around me. Most were the same in basic form — hard, rounded, shaped by years of tumbling waves. But there were differences too: size, color, texture. Some were smooth; others pitted and rough. There were so many, stretching endlessly across the shoreline, and no matter how deep I dug into the sand and stones, there were always more.
That’s when the thought hit me: people are a lot like these rocks. We’re all built the same in essence — head, body, hands, feet. Yet, we’re all different in shape, size, and color. Some of us are “smooth,” some are “pitted” from life’s challenges, but each of us has a story, a purpose, and a place in God’s creation.
Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working with clients to reflect and respond to Psalm 139:13–14 using “I AM” statements. That passage reminds us, “For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made.” Just like each rock on the shore is uniquely shaped and marked, so are we — crafted with intention and beauty by the Creator Himself.
The same God who shaped every stone on that beach shaped each one of us — uniquely, intentionally, and beautifully.
Try This:
Take a few moments today to reflect on Psalm 139:13–14. Write down your own “I AM” statements as a reminder of how God sees you. Here are a few examples to get you started:
- I am fearfully and wonderfully made.
- I am created with purpose.
- I am unique, with my own story and design.
- I am deeply loved by my Creator.
- I am a work of art in God’s hands.
Let these truths sink in. Just like the rocks on the beach, you are one of a kind — and you are exactly how God meant you to be.
Be blessed because you ROCK!! Be a blessing to the other rocks!!
