Look for the Helpers

One of Mr. Rogers’ famous lines is, “Look for the helpers.” As he tells the story, his mother would say this to him whenever he saw frightening things on the news. Her words have always reminded me that, even in difficult times, there are those who step forward to bring comfort and healing.

As a minister and therapist, I am often placed in those moments—to be a helper.

Recently, I was invited to lead a prayer at a staff meeting for the clinic where I work. With a little help from ChatGPT, I wrote the following prayer.

A Prayer of Blessing for Therapists

Jehovah Rapha, Lord who heals,
we thank You for calling us to share in Your work of healing.
You have entrusted us with the sacred task of listening, guiding,
and walking beside those who are hurting.

Bless our ears, that we may hear beyond words.
Bless our eyes, that we may see Your image in every person we serve.
Bless our minds with wisdom and discernment
to bring clarity, courage, and peace to those in need.

In our own moments of tension and anxiety,
remind us that You are the One who speaks peace to calm our storms,
who parts the sea of anxiety so we may walk on dry land.

When the burdens of others weigh heavy on our hearts,
be our refuge and strength.
Renew us with Your Spirit so we may continue to bring light into dark places.

May our work reveal Your restoring power,
our words echo Your truth,
and our hearts rest in the assurance that You—Jehovah Rapha—
are the ultimate healer of body, mind, and soul.

Through You, the Wonderful Counselor, we pray.
Amen.

In every season of life, we are given opportunities to be helpers. May we remember the work of Jehovah Rapha in our own lives—reaching out with healing hearts and hands, confident in His power to bring renewal and hope to others.

Be blessed—and be a blessing to others.
