I have on my desk a journal that someone gave to me a while back. The cover of the journal is a quote from Boyd K. Packer, “Prayer is your personal key to heaven.”
As a therapist who works with couples, I stress communication is a key to creating a healthy marriage relationship. In fact, as I listen to couples, I always will ask, “How did you communicate that?”
So, follow my thoughts here . . . if prayer is a form of communication and communication is key to having a healthy relationship with someone, wouldn’t it be logical to believe that prayer is the way to having a healthy relationship with God?
Long ago, I heard Jerry Brackney say, “Good, healthy communication to a marriage is like blood to your life. If your blood is bad, then you will struggle with poor health.” So again, follow the thought process . . . if good communication can breath life in to your spouse and family, wouldn’t it be logical to believe that prayer can breath life to your relationship with God?
As I teach couples, communication is not only saying what you would like to see happening in your relationship and how it were to feel if that were to happen. It is also listening to your partner (family) to gain an understanding of what they would like as well.
Having said that, what “requests [can] be made known to God” (Philippians 4:6)? But remember, life giving prayer is also waiting “patiently for the Lord” (Psalm 40:1) to hear what he desires for your relationship with Him.
Be blessed and be a blessing!
