It’s been a difficult couple of weeks in our nation. Several mass shootings over the past several weeks have taken over our news stations. Social media posts clamor for this or that. Fuel prices are getting higher. It seems the chaos and madness never end. Brokenness is experienced all over.
So, people decide to post and interject their thoughts on what would solve the hurt and brokenness. Sometimes, we feel even our own insight and energy is a futile attempt to provide any kind of oasis in this desert of pain. We find ourselves groaning with the rest of the world and crying out, “How long, O Lord?”
Let me share this song of David:
My enemy has chased me.
He has knocked me to the ground
and forces me to live in darkness like those in the grave.
I am losing all hope;
I am paralyzed with fear.
I remember the days of old.
I ponder all your great works
and think about what you have done.
I lift my hands to you in prayer.
I thirst for you as parched land thirsts for rain. (Psalm 143:3-6, New Living Translation)
No! I don’t have the words right now. That can be frustrating! We want answers! We push for solutions! As I have learned over the past several years of doing counseling, even having the answers will not take away the hurt and pain we are feeling. So, I’m learning to continue to be a quiet, and hopefully, calming presence. Like King David, or maybe this is the shepherd boy, I am reminded of what God has done in the past and what he continues to do. And I pray! And God is there to quench my thirst because my mouth is too dry for words.
Blessings as God quenches your thirst in the desert of your life! Be a blessing to others by being an oasis in their desert!
