“When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, “Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.”― Fred Rogers
Somewhat continuing our thoughts out loud from last week. Remember we talked about God providing the oasis in a desert. Sometimes, it’s found in the people that are there when we are in our desert. Having said that, I hear those who are “helpers” ask, “What do you say to . . . . when this scary thing happens.” It’s the sudden death of a loved one. It’s the loss of a job. Or it’s a diagnosis. My answer is PRESENCE.
After the most recent series of school shootings, I posted, “No words. Just prayers!” We want to help but our words just seem so inadequate. What do you tell someone who just was diagnosed with a form of cancer? What words do you tell a spouse when they have just been told their marriage is ending? No words! Nothing! The shock of what is being said takes away our words just like it has for the person we are sitting with.
But you know what helps? You being there! Really! Just knowing that you are there is enough for those who feel like they are trapped in this moment of brokenness. Mr. Rogers was right, “You will always find people who are helping.”
Three additional thoughts here:
- You need help – maybe you find yourself in a desert of despair and brokenness, who are your “helpers”? Who are those people that will show up when you call or just show up? If you’ve experienced this in the past, reach out to them and thank them for helping you during your “scary” time.
- You helped – maybe you have helped someone through their hurt and pain. Who have you been there for in the past? Who needed you to rush in to put out the fire in their life? It might be a good idea to check on them.
- Stuck – do you feel stuck or know someone who feels stuck? Let me once again offer a listening ear and a helping nature. Studies have shown in the past that in times of crisis, even national crisis, counseling services offices will have an influx of phone calls from people looking for “helpers”. I’m proud to say I’m one of the helpers. Even if I’m just the PRESENCE you need to get you through.
Be blessed in seeking the helpers in your life!! Be a blessing as you help others along the way!
