Jesus had just told his mother, “My time has not come yet.” She just looked at him and those around him and said, “Do what he tells you to do.” In other words, she was telling Jesus, “It’s time!”
Outside my office window is the church sign that we can change letters and give inspiring messages. This week’s message reads, “Patience is trusting in God’s timing.” The other night, as I working through counseling sessions, I noticed a neighbor walking by. She stopped, paused, and clicked a photo.
The story of Jesus and Mary is recorded in John 2 in which Jesus performs the miracle of turning water to wine. As Jesus was replying to his mother, it was not that he didn’t think he was capable. Maybe he thought the event itself was not a good way to show who he was. Maybe he was thinking it just was not the right timing.
It’s funny how we ask and then don’t wait for the Lord. And typically, it happens at a time when we feel we need God to act now and give us an answer. Sometimes, we are so quick to find a solution that we try to fix it ourselves. Remember Abram and Sarai? God tells them they will have a child. First they laughed (because they were old) and then tried to speed up the timing through Hagar. Remember Martha and Mary? Sending word to Jesus that their brother was sick. Jesus didn’t come for several days and Lazarus died.
We learn that God’s timing is not our timing. And we hate that! Don’t we? We hate having to wait in the first place. But to wait on God and His timing? For some of us, that creates more anxiety.
So let’s try something . . . what is the one area of your life you have been most impatient about? Take that to God and wait. There will come a moment that he will lift you out of the pit, steady your feet and give you a new song to sing. And many will see what God has done and give Him praise because of you!
Be blessed as you wait! Be a blessing to others in their waiting!
