Maybe you know or maybe you don’t know – I love Christmas!! I especially like Christmas music! There is some great stuff out there. But there is also some really corny, cheesy stuff out there as well. Over the years, I have collected a pretty decent collection of varying styles of Christmas music. My heart typically gravitates towards some of the old stuff – Bing, Frank, Chipmunks, Muppets. But I have found some recent Christmas albums with new songs that I have grown to love. So, if you will join me over the next few weeks, I would like to possibly introduce you to some of the stuff that I like to listen to that’s not normally on the playlists of Christmas. Some of it may be new to you and some of it may be old. Either way, enjoy during this Christmas season.
The first album that I would like to bring to your attention is Merry Christmas to You by Sidewalk Prophets (https://sidewalkprophets.com). This album came out in 2013 and I just saw they re-released it in 2019 with a few extra songs and called it the “Big Family Edition”.
They have a great mix of old and new music on the album. The old songs are White Christmas, Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas, Silent Night, Holly Jolly Christmas. It’s the new stuff that attracts me to the album each year. And as I start listening to my Christmas music long around September, this is one of the albums I pull out first.
Some of the songs that they have written for Merry Christmas to You are:
- What a Glorious Night – with an intro by the Linus of the Charlie Brown Christmas, they invite into the praise song sung the night Jesus was born
- Hope Was Born that Night – “Let all of the world sing the chorus of joy, because Hope was born this night.” What a great reminder that all of the earth joins in on the anthems of praise the birth of Jesus as a sign of hope for all.
- Don’t Forget the Star – written from the personal story telling perspective. The song is a reminder of God’s declaration of His Son being born to all of the world through the star. The star is a symbol on the Christmas tree and reminder of God coming to be a part of our world.
- Hey Moon – my personal favorite. What would it be like to be in the sky that night as the moon? The song is the dialogue between the Christmas star and the moon as they witnessed the birth of Jesus.
If you haven’t heard of this group or this album. this is a great introduction to this group. They have some great songs.
Let the music be a blessing to you! May you be a blessing of song to others during the season of Christmas!
