Learning to Lament Part 2: Why Honest Prayer Heals

“Pour out your hearts to Him, for God is our refuge.” — Psalm 62:8

When life hurts, our instinct is often to hide our emotions or let them overwhelm us. The Psalms offer a better way. Again and again, the writers of Scripture bring their hearts honestly before God. They don’t deny their pain, but neither do they allow pain to define them. Instead, they turn to the Lord with honesty and trust.

David cried, “How long, O LORD?” The sons of Korah admitted, “My tears have been my food day and night.” Even Jesus prayed the opening words of Psalm 22 from the cross: “My God, my God, why have You forsaken Me?” These prayers remind us that God welcomes honesty. He is not threatened by our grief, our questions, or our tears. He invites us to “pour out” our hearts before Him. That image is beautiful. To pour something out is to stop holding it in.

Counselors have long recognized that buried emotions rarely stay buried. They often resurface as anxiety, irritability, exhaustion, or strained relationships. While talking about our pain doesn’t erase it, acknowledging it is an important step toward healing.

The Psalms have taught this truth for centuries.

Biblical lament, however, is more than emotional expression. It is prayer. We don’t simply release our feelings—we bring them to the God who hears, loves, and cares for us. That’s the difference between venting and lament. Venting often ends with our frustration; lament ends by placing our hearts into God’s hands.

Peter echoes this invitation: “Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you” (1 Peter 5:7). God may not remove every burden immediately, but He promises that we do not carry them alone. Healthy faith is not emotionally numb. It is emotionally honest. God never asks us to pretend everything is okay. He invites us to come to Him just as we are.

This week, spend a few quiet moments with Psalm 62:8. Bring your fears, disappointments, and unanswered questions to the Lord. You don’t need polished words. An honest heart is enough.

Reflection: What have you been holding inside? Today, take a few moments to pour out your heart to God. The One who knows you completely also loves you perfectly.

Be blessed!! Be a blessing!!
