It’s hard to believe another school year is beginning! New backpacks, fresh school supplies, new teachers, new classrooms, and new routines. For some, the return to school brings excitement and anticipation. For others, it may bring nervousness, uncertainty, or even a few tears. And for parents, it can be a mixture of pride, worry, and the realization that another season of their child’s life is beginning.
As a church family, it’s important to remember that back to school is about more than preparing backpacks and schedules—it’s about preparing hearts.
Give Grace During the Transition
Transitions can be difficult, even when they are good. Children may be more tired, emotional, or anxious as they adjust to new routines. Parents can feel the pressure to have everything organized and running smoothly.
Give yourself—and your children—some grace.
Simple things can help: consistent routines, adequate sleep, healthy meals, time to talk, and opportunities for children to share what they are experiencing. Sometimes the most helpful thing a parent can say is, “It’s okay to feel nervous. We’ll figure this out together.”
And remember that children take their emotional cues from the adults around them. When we model calm, patience, and trust in God, we help them learn how to navigate the uncertainties of life.
Remember What Matters Most
The school year will bring homework, tests, grades, sports, friendships, activities, and responsibilities. Those things matter, but they do not define our children.
Before we ask, “How did you do?” perhaps we should sometimes ask, “How are you doing?”
Our children don’t need perfect parents, perfect teachers, or a perfect school year. They need adults who will listen, encourage, pray with them, and remind them that their identity and worth are not found in achievement—but in being loved by God.
Deuteronomy 6 reminds us that faith is passed from one generation to the next through the everyday moments of life. As a church, we have the wonderful privilege of coming alongside parents as they guide their children toward Christ.
Let’s Pray for Our Children
As this new school year begins, let’s pray for more than good grades and successful seasons. Let’s pray for courage when our children are afraid, wisdom when they face difficult choices, healthy friendships, teachers who recognize their potential, and hearts that remain open to God.
And let’s pray for parents, too—for patience, wisdom, discernment, and the grace to know when to encourage, when to listen, and when simply to be present.
Pick up a Kids’ Prayer Calendar and join our church family in intentionally praying for our children each day. Let’s cover our kids, their teachers, their families, and their schools in prayer throughout the school year.
Our children may be the ones going back to school, but we all have a role in helping them grow. May we begin this new school year with prepared backpacks, prayerful hearts, and a renewed trust in God.
Be blessed!! Be a blessing!!
