Stuck! When Surviving Won’t Shut Down

We are at part 2 of this discussion of trauma and healing looking at the thoughts of when trying to survive will not go away. Remembering last week, we named the feeling of being “not at ease.” This week, we take a step deeper.

What if some of what you’re feeling is not weakness… but survival?

When Protection Lingers

God designed our bodies to respond to danger. When something feels threatening, we may become anxious, reactive, shut down, or withdrawn. These responses are not failures — they are ways our body tries to keep us safe. But sometimes what was meant to be temporary stays with us.

A guarded heart, constant alertness, or emotional shutdown may have helped us through something difficult. Over time, though, these patterns can linger, leaving us stuck in survival mode — even when the danger has passed.

Elijah’s Exhaustion

In 1 Kings 19, Elijah reaches a breaking point. He is afraid, overwhelmed, and exhausted. And God’s response is not correction, but care. God gives him rest, food, and presence before anything else. Sometimes the most spiritual thing we can do is not push harder, but receive care.

A Gentler Perspective

If you feel on edge, overwhelmed, or shut down, try asking:

Not just, “What is wrong with me?”
But, “What has helped me survive?”

This shift moves us from shame to compassion — and that is often where healing begins. God is not impatient with your exhaustion. He meets you there, offering rest and peace.

Prayer

Lord,
You know the ways I have tried to protect myself.
Help me to see myself with compassion instead of criticism.
Teach me that it is safe to rest in You.
Meet me in my weariness and lead me toward Your peace.
In Christ’s name,
Amen.

Be blessed! Be a blessing!!
