Summer naturally draws our attention to the sun. Its warmth encourages growth, brightens our days, and sustains life all around us. Gardens flourish, trees become full, and the beauty of creation reminds us of God’s provision.
It is no surprise, then, that the psalmist uses a powerful image when he writes:
“For the Lord God is a sun and shield; the Lord bestows favor and honor. No good thing does He withhold from those who walk uprightly.” (Psalm 84:11)
God is our sun. Just as the sun provides light, warmth, and life, God illuminates our path and nourishes our souls. He brings hope when circumstances seem dark. He strengthens us when we feel weary. He fills our lives with blessings that often go unnoticed amid the busyness of everyday life.
Many of us spend time this summer enjoying God’s creation, but creation itself points us beyond the gift to the Giver. Every sunrise, every warm breeze, every flourishing garden serves as a reminder of the One who sustains all things and lovingly cares for His children.
Yet God is not only our sun.
The psalmist also calls Him our shield. Life is not always easy. Alongside moments of joy come seasons of disappointment, uncertainty, grief, and struggle. We face pressures that challenge our faith and worries that can burden our hearts. In those moments, God does not promise a life free from difficulty, but He does promise His presence.
A shield provides protection in the midst of battle. Likewise, God surrounds His people with His care. He becomes our refuge when fears arise, our strength when we feel weak, and our steady foundation when life feels uncertain.
From both a spiritual and emotional perspective, people flourish when they experience both encouragement and security. We need warmth, but we also need safety. We need joy, but we also need assurance. Psalm 84 reminds us that God provides both. He is the One who nurtures our growth and the One who guards our hearts.
As summer continues, may we remember that our greatest blessing is not found in favorable circumstances, successful plans, or carefree days. Our greatest blessing is found in the presence of God Himself. The Lord is our Sun and Shield. He is the source of our joy, the strength of our faith, and the protector of our souls.
“Lord Almighty, blessed is the one who trusts in You.” (Psalm 84:12)
Be blessed! Be a blessing!!
