Rooted in Christ, Remembering With Gratitude

The church that I work with adopted this theme, Rooted in Christ for 2026. Here is a reflective peace involving that idea with celebrating and honoring those who served in the military and lost their life in service.

Every Memorial Day, our nation pauses to remember.

Flags wave quietly in cemeteries. Families gather around stories of courage and sacrifice. Names are spoken with reverence. We honor men and women who gave their lives so others could live in freedom.

Memorial Day reminds us that remembrance matters.

As Christians, we understand this deeply because our faith itself is rooted in remembering. Throughout Scripture, God continually calls His people to remember His faithfulness, His deliverance, and His covenant love.

The apostle Paul writes:

“So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live your lives in Him, rooted and built up in Him, strengthened in the faith…” — Colossians 2:6-7

To be rooted in Christ means our lives draw strength from something deeper than circumstances. Just as a tree survives storms because of unseen roots, believers endure hardship because they are anchored in Jesus.

Memorial Day can become more than a national holiday. It can also be a spiritual reminder.

We remember sacrifice because the Christian story is built upon sacrifice. Jesus laid down His life so that we could know true freedom — freedom from sin, fear, and death itself. The cross stands as the greatest memorial of sacrificial love the world has ever known.

And because we are rooted in Christ, gratitude becomes part of who we are.

We give thanks for those who served.
We give thanks for freedoms often taken for granted.
Most of all, we give thanks for a Savior whose love holds us steady in every season.

In a world that often feels unstable, Memorial Day invites us to pause and reflect on what truly sustains us. Patriotism alone cannot carry the weight of our souls. Only Christ can do that.

So this weekend, as we gather with family, visit memorials, or bow our heads in prayer, may we remember both earthly sacrifice and eternal hope.

May we be people deeply rooted in Christ —
grounded in gratitude,
steadfast in faith,
and committed to living lives worthy of the grace we have received.
